World AIDS Day to offer education
December 1, 1995
World AIDS Day will be bringing several activities to Iowa State today in recognition of artists who have lost their lives to the AIDS epidemic and to educate students about the deadly virus.
“Day Without Art” is an international program that is a part of World AIDS Day. Artwork on campus will be shrouded today to emphasize “that the world has lost sight of visual artists due to AIDS,” said Dustin Smith, a student intern who runs the Day Without Art program.
Staff at the Brunnier Art Museum will select various pieces of art that will be covered.
The Brunnier Art Museum is participating in the program in conjunction with the Student Health Center, the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), the Story County AIDS Coalition and the Art Education Appreciation Club.
Booths will also be set up today in the Memorial Union, said Mary Engstrom, Student Health Center health educator and SHAC advisor.
Red stickers, red ribbons, literature on the HIV/AIDS virus, literature on HIV testing, condoms and “101 ways to have fun without having sexual intercourse” will be available at the booth from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
All of the residence halls will also be hosting booths. Engstrom said SHAC and the Richardson Court Association “pooled their efforts” and will be selling T-shirts.
Advisor for the Students and Staff Against AIDS, Kay-lynne Johnson-Willoughby, said the booths in the residence halls will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Similar materials such as buttons, flyers and condoms will be at the residence hall booths.
“We must all take our part in the responsibility,” Johnson-Willoughby said.
Also at the booths, raffle tickets will be given out for a recommended donation of $1 for chances to win World AIDS Day jackets, shirts, a bag and gift certificates.
