GSB Senate calls for revised allocations for athletics
November 17, 1995
A resolution to revise student fee allocations for intercollegiate athletic funding passed unanimously at Wednesday’s Government of the Student Body meeting.
The resolution, sponsored by Sen. Josh Hansen, stated that GSB would commit to a $10 increase per student in student fees for funding intercollegiate athletics. However, it would do so according to a timetable set by the Special Student Fee Committee.
The increase was proposed by the committee last spring.
The $10 increase was originally to be applied in two $5 installments, one which already went into effect and one which will go into effect during the 1997 fiscal year. This increase would bring the per student athletic department contribution total to $19.75. The increases would give the athletic department an additional $260,000 more to fund nonrevenue sports, said Laurie Gustafson, athletic financial affairs manager.
Because of a lower-than-expected tuition increase, the Special Student Fee Committee only has enough money to cover another $4.04 per-student increase for the athletic department. Officials will now phase-in the second $5 increase.
“We will fund this over a period. This is all the resolution is saying,” GSB finance director Steve Elliot said.
Associate Athletic Director Elaine Hieber said athletic department officials haven’t yet addressed how the GSB decision will affect the department.
Dustin Shaver, a junior in political science and a former student member on the ISU Athletic Council, said the athletic department’s first priority is maintenance and then funding sports. An unexpected athletic department surplus of $750,000 has been designated for repairs at Cyclone Stadium.
“We need to fund the sports that are in jeopardy of being dropped,” Shaver said. “We need to improve the sports we have and keep them. We should meet our obligation, but meet it over a longer term.”
Sen. Brian Allen disagreed, saying there were other issues, such as funding Cy-Ride, that should be taken care of first.
The resolution, Elliott said, would allow the Special Student Fee Committee “the flexibility to change the dollar amount” if the athletic department’s financial situation improves.
