GSB wants more student input for Trophy Tavern smoking ban
October 5, 1995
The Government of the Student Body passed an emergency resolution Wednesday, encouraging the Memorial Union Board of Directors to reconsider its decision to ban smoking in the Trophy Tavern.
The resolution implies that student input opinion was disregarded when the decision was made.
The resolution, which passed 29-2, was sponsored by GSB Sen. Matthew Goodman. It said that at the Sept. 28 Board of Directors meeting, the smoking ban was not included on the agenda and was only acted upon during meeting’s closing remarks.
Students voiced their concerns, saying the action is unfair to smokers. The only other place to smoke on campus is the Maintenance Shop.
“If the [MU’s] remodeling budget is being used, the university has managed to take all our smoking areas,” Amy Deming, a senior in business, said.
Scott Terpkosh, a SUB/GSB Computer Lab administrator, said one reason smoking was banned in the Trophy Tavern was because so many minors were caught smoking.
“Maybe the Ames parents are complaining about where the high schoolers are, but I’ve never seen any sense in punishing the good people to punish the bad people,” Deming said.
Jay Sithambaram, a junior in mechanical engineering and a former employee of the Union, said minors should be accompanied by their parents if they are to smoke in the Trophy Tavern. However, he said, this isn’t enforced.
“[Students] never get much support than from the Student Union Board,” he said.
Goodman said roughly one-third of the board is made up of students, but that they were still the minority in this decision.
