Break a leg during Nutcracker auditions
August 30, 1995
Attention! All you people who aspire to pour your hearts out upÿon stage, do not miss this opportunity! Auditions will be held for the 15th annual production of The Nutcracker Ballet at Stephens Auditorium Sept. 10.
“We’ve had a good response in the past,” said Sara Huber, Performing Arts Coordinator for Iowa State Center, referring to the number of people at auditions in the past. “I hope it continues this year.”
Huber said that in previous years, people had to be turned away at the door due to the huge turnout at auditions.
She also added that turning people away is “unfortunate,” but appreciates the amount of support the production has received.
Throughout the 15 years that The Nutcracker has been performed at Iowa State University, something special is done each year to enhance the production.
“In the past, we’ve gotten new costumes or redone the backdrop, giving each production a new look,” Huber said.
As far as the new wrinkle for 1995, she said that the production is “still in the planning stages.”
One special aspect of the production is having dancers from New York come in and fill the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier. Huber said this brings “name recognition” to the production.
The Nutcracker began its run at Iowa State University 15 years ago, brought about by Dick Snyder, who, according to Huber, “was a real dance aficionado.”
The first production found its way onto the airwaves, airing on IPTV (channel 11). It hasn’t been shown on television since the first performance, however.
Auditions for this year’s three performances will run Sept. 10 from 12 noon until 7 p.m.
Children will be auditioning between 12 noon and 3 p.m., adults between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., and dancing performers from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
People auditioning are asked to arrive early to fill out registration forms prior to their audition time. Those that are auditioning for dancing roles should wear leotards, tights and ballet or pointe shoes.
Parking will be available in lot B-3. People are to enter Stephens through the Stage Door on the southeast side.
