Post-breakup, music and songs often serve as an outlet to let out internal rage, with words perfectly strung together by our favorite artists. Whether you’re the one who’s left heartbroken or the one who initiated the broken heart, breakup songs are important when it comes to getting over a former significant other.

If you haven’t already created one, these songs will make great additions to any breakup playlist or give you the green light to curate one yourself.

“Driver’s License” by Olivia Rodrigo

This power ballad, sung by 17-year-old Disney star Olivia Rodrigo, initially gained popularity on TikTok due to the drama behind the lyrics and the widespread relatability to the lyrics.

Rodrigo tells the story of a young girl finally gaining independence via way of her driver’s license and driving past an ex-boyfriend’s house. The song is nostalgic for those who experienced young romance that ended abruptly.

After quickly gaining traction on social media platforms such as TikTok, those who are both single and in committed relationships professed their love for the song, despite not experiencing a recent breakup.

“Falling” by Harry Styles

Although it hasn’t been stated that this is a breakup song, the lyrics describe going through a revealing time in one’s personal life and hitting a low.

Hence the “falling.”  When Harry Styles released his second solo album, “Fine Line” in 2019, this song quickly became the anthem for those experiencing a personal low, including breakups.

“Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson

The power anthem to end all power anthems. This song is reserved for the stage of the post-breakup process when your sadness has transformed into anger. While blaring this song in the car with your friends might get you out of breath, it’s a necessity when your schedule prior to car jam sessions is filled with eating ice cream in your bed and bingeing rom-coms.

“Out of Love” by Alessia Cara

This quiet, truthful, slow song is packed with questions that are sure to bring tears to eyes and force you to reflect on your previous relationship. Wondering what forced your special someone to fall “out of love” with you and at what point during the relationship it happened are difficult questions to ask — let alone try and figure out the answers to.

Cara’s soft voice within the song provides a solemn tone, one that cues the waterworks.

It’s no secret that those within a committed relationship, those who have yet to be in one or those fresh out of one — everyone enjoys a good breakup song — no matter the circumstances.
