Iowa State wins big in season’s first dual

Iowa State took down Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville on Sunday in CY Stephens by a score of 37-3.

Redshirt sophomore Alex Mackall started it off at 125 pounds with a 16-14 decision against Cougars’ freshman Austin Macias. Mackall started strong, but almost let his opponent steal the bout late.

Redshirt freshman Austin Gomez won his match at 133 pounds with a technical fall against redshirt freshman Jacob Blaha.

Redshirt sophomore Ian Parker dominated his 141-pound match against freshman Coleman Brainard with a pin.

Redshirt junior Jarrett Degen won his bout as well with a technical fall against redshirt junior Tyshawn Williams. Williams got injured mid-match, but opted to continue and was not the same from that point on.

157-pound redshirt junior Chase Straw was the first Cyclone loser. He lost to freshman Justin Ruffin by a decision of 9-4.

165-pound redshirt junior Brady Jennings faced off against redshirt senior Nate Higgins. Higgins took the bout with a 10-6 decision.

174-pound redshirt freshman Marcus Coleman won his first match for the Iowa State team with a pin against freshman Ryan Yarnell.

Redshirt sophomore Sam Colbray faced off against freshman Sergio Villalobos in the 184-pound division. Colbray was able to defeat Villalobos with a 10-3 decision.

Star transfer and 197-pound redshirt senior Willie Miklus wrestled in his first bout attached to Iowa State and was able to defeat senior Christian Villalobos with a 4-3 decision.

Heavyweight Gannon Gremmel won his bout against redshirt sophomore Tommy Helton by decision with a score of 8-5.

Iowa State travels to Saint Charles, Missouri, to take on Lindenwood next Saturday.
