Cyclone men’s golf staying close to home for Zach Johnson Invitational
The Iowa State men’s golf team will continue their season at the Zach Johnson Invitational, hosted by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The Cyclones have finished 11th and 15th in their first two events of the season and look to turn the page after a week off from competitions.
Junior Lukas Pany will be making his return to the cyclone lineup for this event. Pany was replaced by redshirt sophomore Jake Slocum for the Gopher Invitational. Pany and Slocum finished last among the cyclones in both of their starts this season, with Slocum finishing second to last overall.
The rest of the starting lineup stays the same: sophomore Luke Gutschewski, the two freshmen in Paul Beauvy and Kyo Morishita, and redshirt senior Nate Vance.
The bright spot so far for the Cyclones has been Gutschewski, who finished 16th at the Fighting Irish Classic and tied for 18th at the Gopher Invitational. He’s been able to get off to a good start in both events but has struggled to finish strong in the third round.
Both Beauvy and Morishita are making their third consecutive start this season. The two freshmen have finished middle of the pack in both events so far this season. They have had trouble in the third round, with both of them racking up multiple bogeys. Both have finished over par in each event so far this season.
The Cyclones will be competing against 13 other teams, all of which they have not seen yet this season. Coming into the season, Iowa State was ranked 103rd, which is the best of all teams they will be competing against.
The weather should not be a problem in this competition, with a high of 69 on both days and clear skies ahead.
Iowa State will tee off Monday morning for the first two rounds and then pick up on Tuesday for the final round.
