Three Big Takeaways: Day one of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic
Day one of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Arizona, has concluded. Here are the three big takeaways from the Cyclones’ performance.
Top-10 finish
Iowa State is currently tied for ninth place after 36 holes and will golf 18 more Tuesday. They finished the first round with a score of 286 and scored a 293 in the second round. Their 579 total score from day one has them ahead of TCU, who is in 12th place after scoring a 584 after day one.
The Cyclones finished day one shooting three over par and are only two strokes behind eighth place UC Davis.
If the Cyclones continue to get production out of Luke Gutschewski and Nate Vance in the third round, Iowa State could find themselves passing UC Davis in the standings after the Aggies dropped four spots in the team standings after round two.
Two Cyclones under par after day one
Gutschewski has continued to be the best golfer for the Cyclones this season. He was one of two Cyclones to finish the day under par, scoring three under, which is good for a tie for 12th place in the individual standings.
Paul Beauvy also finished the day under par, scoring one under total. Beauvy dropped 15 spots in the individual standings after shooting a five over on the back nine of the second round. After round one, he was four under par.
After the front nine of round two, Beauvy was six under par. After the back nine of round two, he was one under par and could have a strong performance in round three.
Beauvy and Gutschewski are the only two Cyclones in the top-25 of the individual standings after day one.
What is left to come in round three
If the results from Monday hold, Iowa State could finish in the top half of all teams for the first time since the Marquette Intercollegiate back in October where they finished fourth out of 15 teams. There are 21 teams in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
Beauvy will look to bounce back after shooting five over on the back nine of the second round. He can make a big impact on where the Cyclones finish as a team if he has a strong performance in the third round.
Gutschewski has continued to be consistent for Iowa State this season. His three under score in the second round propelled him to 13th place in the individual standings. So, Iowa State will need more of his consistency if they want to finish in the top half of teams at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
Vance shot even par in the second round. If he were to improve on that in the third round, he could be a wild card that could also help secure a good finish for the Cyclones.
The third round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic will take place Tuesday. Live stats can be found here.
