Dear Daily readers,
It is that time once again to extend the offer of a columnist position to anyone who may have an interest in writing for this publication. Beyond enabling your own voice, writing as an opinion columnist for the Iowa State Daily has many practical benefits that are useful.
First, adding “Columnist” to your resume sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. If you are willing to commit the time and effort to composing thoughtful articles, the work will pay off. Employers will see you as someone who can communicate effectively and, more importantly, as someone who is unafraid to be themselves, but can do so in an intelligent manner.
Secondly, having a voice matters and there is no better medium to express your views than through an opinion column. Topics are not limited to politics and society, but can be about virtually anything one is passionate about. For example, submissions in the past ranged from deliberations about Iowa agriculture policy to new visions for CyRide bus routes. The Daily Opinion section is truly your canvas.
Thirdly, which is more of an extension of the second point, is that writing is fun. In my time so far with the Daily, I have truly discovered that writing is one of my many passions in life, and being able to share it with our university community is immensely rewarding.
Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in taking us up on the offer. It is an incredible opportunity and is super easy to get involved.
Best wishes,
Caleb
