With over 30,000 students at Iowa State, thousands of songs, artists and genres are listened to on campus every day. While the music taste of each student is a personal preference, when asked about their favorite genres, students revealed unknown connections between their music and majors.
A group of students provided insight into their music taste through a survey offered by the Iowa State Daily. The top 13 listened-to genres were revealed and displayed through the pie graph shown above. The survey also uncovered artists and songs popular among the student population.
Cameron Springman, a sophomore in agriculture systems technology, said her top three genres are country, hip-hop and Christian music. Her favorite song is “The Painter” by Cody Johnson, and recognized Sam Barber as her top artist.
In a survey, students were asked for their majors, top genre(s), artists and songs.
The top three genres listed by Iowa State students are pop, with 18.6% of survey takers selecting the category. Rock came second with 15%. Indie rounded up the top three with 14.6%.
The major with the most pop listeners was mechanical engineering, with 14.4% of the responses.
Rock attracted the largest number of listeners from Iowa State’s biology majors. The major made up 15.3% of responses, including Taylor Kniss, a freshman in biology. Kniss also included hip-hop and alternative in her top choices, and her favorite artist was The Neighborhood.
The third most popular genre was indie, with design majors being the highest population of listeners with 13.3%, according to survey responses.
As for individual artists, students shared a wide variety of names covering an array of genres. Students mentioned Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Kanye West and Noah Kahan more than any others.
Joan Trujillo, a junior in industrial design, selected Zach Bryan as his favorite artist, with his favorite genres being lo-fi, hip-hop and country.
Students also shared a vast range of songs; but, “All My Love” by Noah Kahan, “Bags” by Clairo, “Work Song” by Hozier and “Mayonnaise” by Smashing Pumpkins topped the list as they were the only songs mentioned multiple times.

This is very well put together and was fascinating to read. I am not biased as a friend of Eliana. This is peak journalism, plain and simple.
