This Valentine’s Day, the heart of the Maintenance Shop will be pumping to the rhythm of the blues.
Both lovers and the broken-hearted can come to the M-Shop at 8 p.m. Wednesday to see Mississippi Heat, a Chicago blues band best known for their delta-style blues. The band’s sound is similar to Rock and Roll Hall of Famers John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy, who both performed at the M-Shop back in the 1980s.
The band’s most popular song, “Chicago Is My Home,” has over 350,000 listens on Spotify. The song features a 12-bar blues progression that drives the song from front to back. Over the groovy bass is a soulful harmonica played by Pierre Lacocque, the band’s main songwriter.
According to the band’s website, Lacocque fell in love with the harmonica and the blues in the 1970s while attending the University of Chicago’s High School. After attempting to make it as a touring musician and failing to make enough money to survive, Lacocque decided to pursue an education in clinical psychology.
After a decade of academia, Lacocque felt the blues calling his name again, and in 1991, he helped form Mississippi Heat.
Formed in Chicago, Mississippi Heat started their career in the historic blues clubs of Windy City, often frequenting Buddy Guy’s Legends club.
This tradition continued over the next 33 years, with the band being a staple of the American blues circuit, playing at festivals like Poconos and the Chicago Blues Festivals.
Live performances of Mississippi Heat at Rosa’s Lounge Chicago can be found on YouTube.
Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. for Mississippi Heat’s performance. Tickets can be purchased before the show from the M-Shop’s website or from the M-Shop’s box office from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. On the day of the show, tickets will increase by $2.
