AMES – The Cyclone soccer team came into Sunday’s game on a high, after beating the University of Northern Iowa 6-1 on Sunday after the 1-1 against Drake on Thursday.
Iowa State played its best game so far this season, with head coach Matt Fannon celebrating his 100th career win after Sunday’s successful win.
“Winning the game is what matters,” Fannon said. “The women playing so well is what matters, so that’s all I care about.”
The Cyclones led the game with three goals in the first period. Newcomer Seulgi Lee scored her first goal as a Cyclone on an assist from redshirt junior Magdalena Keck. Shortly after, senior Hannah Shaw scored her first goal of the season after coming off the bench two seasons prior due to injuries.
“[Shaw] has worked so hard to put herself in a place where she can even be on the field so I am over the moon for her, she’s wonderful,” Fannon said.
Iowa State and Northern Iowa battled hard during the last minutes of the first period with junior Isabella Agrusso obtaining a goal with an assist from senior Lauren McConnell.
Shortly after, Northern Iowa kept Iowa State on their toes by scoring against their tough defense. However, the goal did not faze the Cyclones as they started the second period with another goal by Shaw with an assist by Ella Zimmerman.
“Being able to score two goals and help my team win is everything I ever wanted,” Shaw said.
The Cyclones finished off strong with Morgan Furmaniak scoring her third goal of the season and Zimmerman securing the win for the Cyclones with her first goal of the year. They hope to continue their success during their next match on the road against Memphis at 8 p.m. Sunday. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
