The Housing Fair, hosted by Student Engagement, provided housing information and free giveaways to students and the Ames community on Thursday. Vendors lined tables in the Memorial Union’s Durham Great Hall as they gave students the opportunity to find their next home.
Kylie Richardson, a junior in political science, said that she enjoyed the free giveaways and housing information.
“My favorite thing I picked up [is] probably this giant mug,” Richardson said. “I like that all of the people who are here are just giving you an in-depth walkthrough of their different living spaces.”
Richardson said her biggest takeaway was not to settle on the first apartment you look at.
“There’s so many more options out there, so just keep your eyes out for something awesome,” Richardson said.
Kristine Heflin, associate director of the Memorial Union for Student Engagement, celebrated a good turnout of students.
“It seems like more students start to expect that it’s happening every year,” Heflin said. “So we’ve had a really good turnout, which is great.”
Heflin noted the Housing Fair is more than just finding your next set of keys. The event provides valuable resources such as student legal services, fire safety and information regarding living both on and off campus.
“We want to help students find a place to live, but we also want them to know kind of what they’re getting themselves into,” Heflin said. “‘What does it cost to live off campus? What are the other things you need to plan for, like trash or utilities? What are your resources?’ Student Legal Services is here. ‘If you had an issue with your landlord, who could you turn to?’ It’s more than just finding a place to live.”
