The Story County Recorder’s office is hosting a special passport day from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday to help residents apply for passports before the holiday and spring break travel season.
In an interview with the Daily, Jim Cheek, the Story County deputy recorder, said the Recorder’s office has hosted passport day twice.
“Last year, it was completely booked,” Cheek said. “This year, we only have two appointments so far.”
Applicants are encouraged to complete their passport forms before attending so they can save time, but they should wait to sign until they are at the office.
According to the Story County website, applying for passports ahead of time helps avoid delays and the need to pay an extra $60 for expedited processing. It usually takes four to six weeks to process a passport during the less busy months from Aug. to Dec. However, the wait time can be longer during the busier months from Jan. to July.
All applicants, including children, must appear in person and everyone under 16 requires both parents present. According to Cheek, applicants should bring a valid driver’s license and proof of citizenship, which can include an “old passport or a birth certificate.”
The office accepts only checks or money orders for passport fees. The $35 application fee can be paid with cash, check or card. Passport photos can be taken during the event for $15, or applicants can bring their own if they meet Department of State requirements. Passport forms, fees and a list of requirements can be found on their official website at www.travel.state.gov.
Passport day is appointment-only, call (515) 382-7230 to reserve a time slot. The event will occur at the Story County Recorder’s Office, 900 6th St., Nevada, Iowa. Early voting will also happen in the same building from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
