For the second week on the road, the Cyclones looked to take another victory against a Big 12 opponent. Iowa State traveled to Tucson, Arizona, to face Arizona. Ultimately, the Cyclones took a tough loss of 195.900-194.525.
Overall performance
The Cyclones started their night on uneven bars. With a 48.950, Iowa State came up short, taking second place in the event. Two gymnasts for the Cyclones held top-five spots.
Going into vault, yet again, the Cyclones took second place in the event, ending with a 48.575 on vault. Iowa State found a way to put up two scores to be in the top five scores individually.
Carrying onto the floor exercise, for the third event in a row, Iowa State had two top-five scores. With a 48.625, the Cyclones still took another second-place team ranking.
Finishing the night with the balance beam, Iowa State scored a 48.375. As the meet wrapped up, Iowa State took second place in all events, leading to the tough loss.
Personal performances
Freshman Frederique Sgarbossa led the team with a 9.850. Sgarbossa’s score earned second place among all individual uneven bars scores. With a 9.825, redshirt sophomore Kaia Bochow tied for third with an Arizona gymnast.
Moving to the vault, senior Josie Bergstrom Te-Slaa put up a 9.800 to lead the team’s individual scores. Sophomore Paige Wills tied for fifth with an Arizona gymnast for a score of 9.750.
Two Cyclones tied for fourth place on the floor exercise. Senior Rachel Wilke and freshman Haylee Hardin both scored a 9.850.
As Iowa State rounded out the night on the beam, Bergstrom Te-Slaa dominated with a score of 9.9 to tie for first place with an Arizona Gymnast.
The final category for the meet was all-around where Bergstrom Te-Slaa tied for third place with an Arizona gymnast for a total of 39.050 across all events.
Senior dominance pops back despite loss
With two top-five individual scores, Bergstrom Te-Slaa took top scores on both vault and balance beam. The overall performance of Iowa State was in a sense of funk, but Bergstrom Te-Slaa kept the energy high throughout the meet and placed third as an all-around gymnast.
An honorable mention for top performers was Hardin, who completed a three-peat by getting her third consecutive Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award.
The Cyclones have some changes to make despite some stellar performances. Iowa State ends its road stand as it returns to Ames to host BYU.
The meet against the Cougars is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Hilton Coliseum. This meet will also honor past gymnasts as a part of alumni night. The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+.
