After a season as a volunteer assistant coach, Brent Metcalf was named an assistant coach on Friday, pending a university background check.

“I am excited to promote Brent within our organization,” said head coach Kevin Dresser in a release. “He did a fantastic job in his first year at Iowa State and I am excited to see him to continue to grow as a coach.

“Getting Brent out on the road recruiting will be a new and exciting challenge for him and, most importantly, a huge asset to the future of Cyclone Wrestling.”

Prior to joining the Iowa State staff, Metcalf won a pair of NCAA titles at Iowa in 2008 and 2010.

Following his graduation at Iowa, Metcalf jumped into competition at the senior level.

Metcalf snagged a spot in the U.S. Freestyle National Team from 2010-16. In 2016, Metcalf transitioned to a role as a coach with USA Wrestling, and he continued in the coaching realm of wrestling, moving to Ames with Dresser’s arrival.

“I very much look forward to taking on a larger role in recruiting and finding the right student-athletes to represent this University,” Metcalf said in a release. “My favorite part about coaching is impacting the lives and careers of young men and I’m laser focused on that mission. I look forward to the challenge of bringing Iowa State Wrestling back to national contention, where it belongs!”
