The No. 3 Iowa State wrestling team defeated Arizona State 29-14 in the second leg of a three-meet road trip.

The Cyclones won seven of the 10 bouts en route to their second victory of the 2026 season.

Iowa State is now 8-1 in Big 12 openers under head coach Kevin Dresser after a win at Arizona State. The victory was Dresser’s 48th Big 12 dual win as head coach of the Cyclones.

Gaitan returns in dominant fashion

Junior Gaitan returned to the Cyclone starting lineup with a 20-5 tech fall over junior Tukhlynovych at 174 lb. The victory, at the moment, gave the Cyclones a 15-14 lead over the Sun Devils. 

The match was the first event wrestled by Gaitan since the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas on Dec. 5.

Gaitan came into the dual with 21 takedowns while only conceding five. Gaitan now has an 8-2 record, remaining undefeated in duals at 3-0.

Echemendia reaches double-digit victories  

Senior Echemendia recorded his third technical fall of the season against senior Alanis, 24-8.

The No. 4-ranked wrestler at 141 lb. recorded seven takedowns in his tenth victory of the season.

Echemendia joined Gaitan and Frost in recording tech falls against the Sun Devils.

Ending with the little guys

The dual concluded with the 125 lb. bout between No. 14 Poulin and ASU’s  Moreno.

Poulin has missed time this season and has struggled to find success in some matches.

Poulin didn’t wrestle at Stanford, and his last match before the Big 12 opener was a loss against Lehigh’s Sheldon Seymour at Journeymen Collegiate Duals.

The major decision was made possible by a fast start by Poulin, who recorded two takedowns and four near-fall points to lead 10-1 after the opening period. 

Poulin escaped and received a riding time point to defeat Moreno in a major decision 12-1.
