The Academy Award nominations came out Thursday, and they held a few surprises, but a lot of trends from previous awards shows have carried over.
The first big topic is that Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” has set the record for most-nominated film ever, with 16 nominations. These include three acting nominations, as well as best original screenplay, best director and best picture. “Sinners” also has the first African American woman nominated for cinematography. All of these awards are incredibly deserved for one of the year’s best movies.
In second was “One Battle After Another” with 13 nominations, including best director, best picture, a total of four acting nominations and best screenplay. This was always going to do well, and not a major surprise that it is second in nominations. Something to note is that both of these films are produced by Warner Bros., which had a big night.
The other big thing of note is that indie darling studio NEON, which has produced a majority of the foreign films in this race, “Sentimental Value” and “The Secret Agent” being the big ones, had 18 nominations as a studio, tied with Netflix’s 18 nominations. This continues what we saw last year: indie films keeping up with these big studios, as A24 also has 11 nominations, nine of them from “Marty Supreme.”
“Marty Supreme,” “Frankenstein,” and “Sentimental Value” all tied for third with nine nominations each.
“Marty Supreme” has Josh Safdie in as director and original screenplay and it also earned best director, as well as getting its leading man, Timothée Chalamet, nominated. Chalamet is the youngest actor ever to have three acting nominations.
“Sentimental Value,” with nine nominations, is one of the best surprises of these nominations. Renate Reinsve for best actress, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for best supporting actress and Stellan Skarsgård for supporting actor are the most well-deserved nominations of the year.
“Hamnet” also finished just behind these films with eight nominations. Chloé Zhao getting best director, Jessie Buckley nominated for best actress and the film getting into best picture are the highlights.
The only real big surprise comes from the best picture list here. The list is as follows: “Bugonia,” “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “One Battle After Another,” “The Secret Agent,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” “Train Dreams” and “F1.”
“F1” sneaking in here is just completely baffling, even as someone who enjoys that movie.
