The Iowa State men’s golf team is looking to continue its momentum swing as it travels to La Quinta, California, for the Prestige at PGA West on Monday.
The Cyclones head into the tournament coming off a third-place finish at the National Invitational Tournament. In the final round, the Cyclones found their groove, shooting a 266 (-22) to secure their second-lowest score in school history. The Cyclones’ 54-hole score of 835 is the sixth-lowest in program history.
Junior Owen Sawyer shot a 66 to tie the lowest round of his career and carded a career-best 54-hole score of -11 to be awarded a third-place finish in the tournament.
Senior Zach May led the way with a career-best 65 that featured one eagle and five birdies in the final round to gain 25 spots and tie the program’s tenth-lowest round.
2025 N.I.T winner senior Paul Beauvy tied for eighth (-8) this go around. Beauvy shot the lowest round of his season (66) in the third round to jump 13 spots.
This week’s lineup includes Beauvy, sophomore Drew Hensen (competing individually), May, junior Jackson McCommon, Sawyer, freshman Jesse Trembath and junior Dianchao Wu.
Beauvy enters as Iowa State’s most consistent scorer, holding the program’s top career stroke average at 71.53.
After a career final round, Sawyer gained three places among the program’s all-time leaders, ranking seventh with a 72.58.
The Cyclones will be tested at PGA West’s newest course, a Greg Norman-designed course stretching over 7,200 yards.
The course is described as being very challenging but fair, with only 68 acres of turf, 102 white crushed marble bunkers and the water hazards coming into play on nine holes.
The tournament was co-founded by Mark Weissmann back in 2000, inspired by his son’s golf journey. The goal is to highlight top-tier academic institutions with strong golf programs.
Iowa State, along with a 24-team field and 11 programs ranked inside the top 54, will tee off starting at 9 a.m. Monday for round one. Live scores can be checked on Clippd.
