The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University premieres a student-produced newsmagazine program, called Studio 308, at 8 p.m. Monday.
Studio 308 is a program produced by the Greenlee students of Electronic Media Production, JLMC 3080, a course taught by Assistant Teaching Professor James McNab that covers the creation of journalistic-specific storytelling and video communications.
Students in this course are responsible for learning the fundamentals of producing and delivering single and multi-camera content. Hence, Studio 308, a fully run student program from the editorial planning and reporting to shooting, writing, editing, producing and directing.
“I took this class because I wanted to learn more skills in video production and editing and this class has already been stretching in the best way,” Maggie Burchett, a junior in advertising, said. “I’ve learned a lot about live production and working in a big goal towards a single goal of making a great show. Everyone’s unique skill set brings so much to the show and I can’t wait to see how Studio 308 evolves throughout this semester.”
Studio 308 is the second broadcast fully produced by Greenlee students. The Sports Broadcast Production course, SMC 3520, offers students a hands-on approach to learning about sports production through their broadcast, Prep Sports Central.
Success in SMC 3520, also taught by McNab, resembles the concept of Studio 308; however, while Prep Sports Central primarily focused on sports, Studio 308 emphasizes news updates, long-form features and studio interviews.
The course will promptly and effectively prepare the class of 19 students for their future careers in electronic media and communications. The students will be presenting images and information creatively using appropriate tools and learn to write correctly and clearly in forms and styles appropriate for the communications profession.
Overall, the student will learn to apply the tools they learned for the appropriate communications professions in which they want to work throughout the course.
“The class is a must-take if you want to build your portfolio,” Nathan Porter, a senior in sports media and communication, said. “Everyone will leave the class with content that they can use when applying for internships or jobs. I credit SMC 3520, a sports version of JLMC 3080, for single-handedly getting me my internship for this summer, and I plan on building my portfolio even more this semester in 3080.”
With a course that highlights the different important parts of the industry, students can learn and build on what they love, while also experiencing real-world hands-on experiences. For Chayse Roecker, a junior in journalism and mass communication, his favorite part so far of this semester-long course is learning the in-depth details of how live broadcasts work.
“My favorite thing I’ve learned so far is probably how live broadcasts truly work,” Roecker said. “The ins and outs of the equipment, what every position does and how vital each position is and just more stuff like that. McNab has done a really good job at making it seem more like a traditional broadcast studio rather than another class.”
Studio 308 will premiere at 8 p.m. Monday. The program will air on Greenlee School Television (GSTV). Viewers can watch the first and future program episodes here.
