As David Cook begins his first official day as Iowa State University’s 17th president Monday, the campus community marks the start of a new chapter in university leadership.
The Iowa Board of Regents selected Cook on Nov. 11 following a national search process. He assumes the role after former President Wendy Wintersteen stepped down and Interim President David Spalding led the university during the transition.
As president of Iowa State University, Cook steps into leadership at a time when the university continues to expand its research portfolio, strengthen student success initiatives and reinforce its land-grant mission across the state.
Throughout the search process, members of the campus community emphasized the importance of accessible leadership, transparency and collaboration, priorities many hope will continue under Cook’s administration.
Cook now becomes the university’s 17th president, joining a line of leaders who have guided Iowa State through periods of growth and change.
His first day offers students, faculty and staff an opportunity to look ahead to the direction and vision he will bring to campus. A video was shared from Cook and his wife, Dr. Katie Cook, expressing their excitement about coming home to ISU.
To welcome David Cook and Katie Cook, the university hosted a public reception Monday afternoon.
The come-and-go event took place from 3 to 5 p.m. on the ground floor of Beardshear Hall. Attendees had the opportunity to greet the Cooks and enjoy refreshments provided by ISU Dining and the ISU Creamery.
