AMES — Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger has named Tim Buckley as the Cyclones’ new assistant coach Monday morning. Buckley will bring over 30 years of experience to the program and is widely recognized for his expertise in player development and recruiting the top talent across the country.

The Waubonsee Community College and Bemidji State alumnus will begin the assistant coaching position immediately, following the departure of former assistant coaches JR Blount and Kyle Green.

“A renowned coach in player development, I’m excited to have Tim [Buckley] join our staff at Iowa State,” Otzelberger said in a press release. “Tim [Buckley] brings a wealth of knowledge, both as a head coach and assistant coach. He has recruited and developed some of the top talents in the NBA. I’m thrilled that our student-athletes will get the opportunity to work with Tim [Buckley].”

Buckley will be welcomed into Hilton Coliseum with experiences ranging from assistant coaching and head coaching, working at a variety of schools across the U.S., including Cincinnati, South Carolina, Indiana, Ball State, Marquette, Iowa, Wisconsin and Rockford.

Otzelberger brought in Buckley after coaching alongside him for two years at UNLV. During that time, Buckley worked on Otzelberger’s staff while also spending time on Kevin Kruger’s staff in Las Vegas for a season.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to be reunited with T.J. Otzelberger,” Buckley said in a press release. “What he has done over the last five years is amazing. Iowa State is a nationally recognized program and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Buckley’s resume includes working with 12 NBA Draft picks, such as recruiting and developing players as Dwyane Wade, Victor Oladipo, Cody Zeller and Noah Vonleh. 

He also helped his teams reach eight NCAA Tournament appearances, three NIT appearances, a trip to the NBA Playoffs and being part of five conference championship-winning teams.
