The orange bleachers inside Valley High School’s gym were filled out with patches of cardinal and gold on Sunday evening.

The Iowa State faithful gathered to check out some of the returning players, along with the new faces in the Cap City League.

Game One

Hannah Homes 129, MRG International 120

Hannah Homes featured Iowa State’s Terrence Lewis, but the Cap City squad played without Iowa State’s incoming transfer Prentiss Nixon.

Without Nixon’s presence on the court, Lewis took over the Hannah Homes offense. Lewis poured in 36 points, eight rebounds and six rebounds.

Lewis’ 36 points were a product of the sophomore-to-be’s ability to pick his spots. Lewis shot 14-23, including 5-8 from three-point range.

On the flip side, MRG International relied on another young Cyclone: Talen Horton-Tucker. Horton-Tucker logged a double-double with 41 points and 10 rebounds.

Horton-Tucker did his damage inside the three-point line, shooting 16-27 on two-point field goals and 1-12 from three-point range.

MRG International and Horton-Tucker were without Zion Griffin, after Griffin sustained a knee injury.

Game Two

Sparta Waste Services 123, Waukee-Clive Veterinary Clinic 110

The second game on the slate in West Des Moines showcased only one Cyclone. Zoran Talley led the Waukee-Clive Veterinary Clinic with 27 points in his Cap City League debut.

Talley also contributed 13 rebounds and five assists. Solomon Young is the other Cyclone teaming up with Talley, but Young will reportedly miss the entire Cap City League season.

Sparta Waste Services was without both its Iowa State players. George Conditt missed the first game due to the FIBA U18 Tournament. Lindell Wigginton announced his decision to sit out Cap City League last week, and Wigginton reassured reporters his plans remain the same.

Without the Cyclone duo, Sparta Waste Services relied on seven players scoring in double-digits to knock off Talley and the Waukee-Clive Veterinary Clinic.

Game Three

Lions Clubs of Iowa 110, Hinterland 98

The nightcap missed out on the 2017 Cap City League MVP Marial Shayok. Shayok sat out due to a sprained ankle.

Without Shayok, Hinterland was left with one Cyclone: walk-on Eric Steyer. Steyer knocked down a three and snared nine rebounds.

The Lions Club of Iowa fed off the performances of its two Cyclones: Tyrese Haliburton and Michael Jacobson.

Jacobson did some dirty work inside, diving on the ground and grabbing 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Haliburton sparked the offense, dropping 28 points, five rebounds and five assists. Haliburton showed some offensive skill inside and paired it with a 5-7 three-point shooting performance.
