Around the Bases: The Kickin’ Chicken Classic

Single

The Cyclones started off the weekend on a strong note. The Cyclones won their first game of the season and their first game under head coach Jamie Pinkerton on a walk off RBI single. It took eight innings but the Cyclones got it done.

Iowa State saw strong pitching from senior right-handed pitcher Brianna Weilbacher. And game-winning performances from sophomores Hannah Carter and Sami Williams.

Sydney Stites performed well in her debut as a Cyclone. The junior transfer from Montana went 2-for-4 in her first win with the team.

Double

Iowa State showed off some strong pitching this weekend. Weilbacher, Emma Hylen, and Savannah Sanders all pitched one complete game. 

Weilbacher pitched an eight-inning game shutout against St. Francis on the first day of the tournament. Weilbacher only gave up three hits and three walks. She had six strikeouts. The Cyclones went on to win that game with a walk off single beating St. Francis 1-0.

Hylen pitched a five innings game and only gave up two runs. Hylen had two errors and gave up a two-run home run against Presbyterian. She had five strikeouts in the game and helped lead the team to victory. The Cyclones beat Presbyterian 10-2.

Sanders pitched a seven-inning game only giving up two runs against UNCG. Sanders gave up three hits, two runs, and three walks in the loss. She had four strikeouts in the game. The offense could not back up her strong performance as the Cyclones fell to UNCG 2-0.

Triple

Sami Williams shined this weekend. The sophomore infielder gave the Cyclones the win in the first game of the tournament. She had the walk off RBI single against St. Francis.

Williams had a huge game against Presbyterian. She went 3-for-4 with one run and four RBI’s. Williams had the first home run against Presbyterian and led the way as three Cyclones hit a home run in the game. Her home run scored three runners and made the score 3-0 in favor of the Cyclones. She also had an RBI double to end the game giving Iowa State the 10-2 win.

Williams had at least one hit every game except for the last game against UNCG.

Homerun

Iowa State had a tough time getting their offense rolling. The Cyclones failed to score any runs in three of five games. The team only had one game where they scored more than one run.

The first game of the tournament the Cyclones only scored one run in extra innings to get the win. That would be the only run for Iowa State that day. The Cyclones failed to score in an 8-0 loss to Coastal Carolina.

The Cyclones did not struggle to put up runs against Presbyterian. They had 10 runs in that game and won 10-2. After a strong performance from the offense against Presbyterian the team failed to score any runs against Coastal Carolina with a 5-0 score.

On the final day of the tournament the Cyclones could not get their bats rolling. They had eight hits on the day but could not convert. They ended the tournament with another shutout against UNCG.
