The Big 12 women’s basketball tournament is going back to Kansas City in 2020.

The announcement was made by Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby during his press conference at men’s basketball media day on Tuesday in Kansas City.

“We feel like there’s some synergy between the men’s and women’s tournaments and men’s and women’s crowds,” Bowlsby said. “We are looking forward to coming back to Kansas City.”

The tournament will be held at the 9,987-capacity Municipal Auditorium, the current home of the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos, and will be the same weekend as the men’s conference tournament. The arena has undergone five million dollars in renovations to improve video boards and locker rooms.

The women’s conference tournament had previously been in Kansas City for 11 years, including a six-year stretch from 1997-2002. The last time the tournament was in Kansas City was in 2012, when Baylor defeated Texas A&M 73-50 in the championship game.

Both of the Cyclones’ conference tournament titles under Coach Bill Fennelly have come at Municipal Auditorium, in 2000 and 2001. The Cyclones are 15-9 all-time in Kansas City.

In a video posted on the Cyclones’ official Twitter account, Fennelly shared his reaction to the announcement.

“Could not be more excited to hear that the Big 12 women’s tournament is going to Kansas City,” Fennelly said. “I think some of the finest memories that I have are of when we played there.”
