A heavy battle between two top-10 teams, No.7 Iowa State and No.6 Central Oklahoma, went down to the final seconds.

In similar fashion to the last meeting in October between these two teams, Iowa State split the series with a 3-2 loss in Saturday’s match-up.

Iowa State stuck with Derek Moser in net as it did on Friday while UCO went for a new look following the 5-2 loss and started backup goaltender Jacob Wallstedt.

In the first period, Iowa State had an early power play opportunity but failed to capitalize. Shortly after, Central Oklahoma took the lead when right winger Andrei Novikov slapped one home from the right face-off circle at 13:58.

UCO came close to closing out the first period with the lead until Cyclone forward Jon Severson scored with 2.7 seconds remaining to tie the game at one goal a piece.

Late in the first, one of Iowa State’s top scorers, Aaron Azevedo, was assessed a game misconduct and sat out for the rest of the night.

Heading into the second period, captain Kody Reuter game Iowa State a 2-1 lead from the point at 8:00. Reuter’s goal would be the only one in a chippy second period.

In the final period, the Bronchos quickly tied it up 55 seconds in as Landon Robin banked in a shot from the crease.

With a couple power play opportunities for both sides, neither team was able to take the lead until Central Oklahoma’s Josh Wyatt scored the game winning goal on the power-play after Cyclone defenseman Jake Arroyo took a slashing penalty with 8:29 left in the third.

Iowa State battled until the end and had a chance after pulling Moser, but couldn’t get anything past Wallstedt.
