Freshman steepler Kelly Naumann takes sixth in steeplechase at Drake Relays
April 30, 2016
DES MOINES — After ISU sophomore Jhoanmy Luque was scratched from competing in the triple jump Saturday, Kelly Naumann was called on to lead off the final day of Drake Relays competition for the Cyclones.
The freshman, who was competing in just her second 3,000-meter steeplechase of her career, ran a more than 20-second personal record in the event, finishing sixth overall in 10:36.34.
While Naumann was unable to reach her goal of running a sub-10:35 time, she recorded the third fastest time in ISU history in the event despite running on a water-soaked track.
“Anything can happen,” Naumann said earlier in the week. “You can’t really take weather into account. You never know what you’re going to be able to do.”
Naumann will get another crack at running a sub-10:35 time in two weeks at the Big 12 Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.
“I want to score at Big 12s; I think that’s a really obtainable goal,” Naumann said. “My coach thinks that it’s time, and I want to contribute to the team because the steeplechase is a more specialized event, so not as many people do it; there’s more opportunities for scoring.”
Naumann’s time at the Drake Relays would have placed her third overall at last year’s Big 12 Championships, making her goal of scoring at this year’s event well within reach.
The ISU women’s distance medley relay, which was led by Maddie Nagle, Alyssa Gonzalez, Jasmine Staebler and Kate DeSimone, finished eighth in 11:43.14.
2014 NCAA outdoor shot put champion Christina Hillman completed competition for the Cyclones at the Drake Relays, placing second overall in the shot put with a best throw of 52 feet 9.50 inches, which is more than 2 feet shorter than her season-best throw of 54 feet 11.50 inches.
ISU distance runner Perez Rotich was pulled from competing in the women’s 1,500-meter run.
