January 16, 2016
In the second matchup of the weekend, Illini hockey entered the game with a score to settle. After losing the previous game 4-3 to the Cyclones, they came hungry for a win.
But it was the Cyclones who struck first at the 3 minutes and 40 seconds into the start of the game with a shot from Aaron Azevedo with assists from Colton Kramer and Tony Uglem.
1:25 after the Cyclones second power play of the second period expired, the Illini rallied to tie the game at one at the 12:05 mark with a goal by Grant Stueve off of a feed from Tyler Opilka.
Both teams headed to the locker room a little heated after there was some shoving between the two rivals.
The chippiness continued throughout the third period, but all shots were stopped and the game headed into extra minutes to decide a winner.
The game headed to a shootout and after 3 rounds, Illinois took the lead and won the game. The final score was 2-1 with the shootout goal being scored by Stueve.
The Cyclones next game is at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena as they go up against the Twin City Steel at 7:30 p.m.
