Running part 1: Gear
June 8, 2015
With the weather heating up, motivation to run is cooling down. As a beginner summer runner, proper attire is as important as the actual act of running. Having the right gear from head to toe can make the difference in a run. To start, “for women, a great sports bra” and “for men, a great pair of shorts” are closet essentials, said Julie Gongliewski, director of apparel sales at Brooks Running.
To help jump start your summer run wardrobe, here are some affordable options and places to find what you need:
Feet: Most beginner runners don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars for shoes, but having a solid pair of shoes doesn’t have to be that expensive. There are many sites that carry discounted name brand shoes. Places like the Running Room in Des Moines have discounts on the last season model of shoes as well. They will also look at how you run, the way the foot pronates and fit you accordingly. Look for something that is comfortable, feels like it hugs to the foot without being too tight and something that will move with you as you run. Generally, a running shoe should have extra room at the big toe area to prevent damage to the big toe and loss of toenails. Water wicking socks are also important. They prevent blisters and athlete’s foot.
Bottoms: For the summertime, shorts are usually the go-to bottoms. Finding a pair of shorts that doesn’t ride up and is breathable is crucial. For women, the Nike Tempo Run is an affordable pair of shorts to start with. For men, the Brooks Essential Run Short is a great option. Another option is Lululemon Athletica for a pair of breathable capris or tights for those cooler mornings.
Sports Bras: This does not apply to men, but a supportive, comfortable sports bra is really impactful in your run. You want something that is not too loose allowing yourself to bounce every step, but also something that is not too tight to constrict your ability to feel comfortable.
Tops: To avoid chafing, finding sweat resistant and breathable attire is important. On a cooler summer morning, a simple T-shirt such as the Nike Run Swoosh for women is the perfect choice. On a warmer day, a Lululemon Athletica Think Fast Tank is the way to go. For men, the men’s EZ T III is lightweight and moveable in. On warmer days, a lot of men go shirtless, but that is just personal preference with your own comfort.
