Taylor Sanderson made his mark on the ISU men’s track and field leaderboards, finishing second all-time on Iowa State’s top-ten performers list in the decathlon with his 7,360 mark in the Mt. SAC Relays in California. It was also good for fifth in the nation.

Sanderson, a Bondurant, Iowa, native, set personal records in the 100-meter race (11.12 seconds), long jump (23-0.375), javelin throw (166-03) and the 1,500-meter race (4:58.53 minutes) on his way to the best finish in his career.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Sanderson also managed to grab a first-place finish, crossing the line at 14.91 seconds. The Redshirt Junior also had a record-setting heptathlon during the indoor season earlier this year.

Last season, Sanderson finished fifth at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship and seventh in the ISU history books with a score of 6,925 in the decathlon. He said that his goal this season is to get a score between 7,400 and 7,500 at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, which he believes will be enough to qualify him for the NCAA Outdoor Championships come June.

Sanderson will take a break from the Drake Relays to recover but may be back in action in the following weeks.
