5 ways to give a gift card

While couples are still making wedding registries featuring all of the items they want or need to begin their life together, giving gift cards as wedding presents is increasing in popularity.

Getting married while in college or at a young age can be a financial difficulty.

Melissa Burnett-Larkins, a junior in child, adult and family services and also a bride-to-be, says that money, whether it be gift cards or cash, is always a safe way to go.

The couple can use it wherever it is needed, including a boost to the honeymoon fund.

However, giving a gift card may feel like an inadequate contribution, regardless of the amount on the card. Here are five ways to make giving a gift card a more personal present.

1. Compliment it with a DIY gift.

Find a craft that won’t break the bank, and personalize it to the couple’s home or lifestyle. For example, a unique wall decoration featuring the couple’s last name to go in their home’s entryway.

2. Buy a card with a purpose.

Is the couple asking for an expensive coffee maker? Find the needed accessories to go along with it and write that on the gift card.

“Use this to start your coffee supply so when the coffee maker arrives, you’re ready!” the message could read.

3. Give the perfect picture frame.

After the wedding, the couple will have stacks of pictures ready to display around their home. Help them out by purchasing a frame that will hold multiple photos.

Instead of leaving the frame empty, replace them with gift cards to a few of their favorite stores.

4. Treat the couple to a date night.

Early on in marriage, the couple might not have as much free time as they used to. Purchase a gift card to their favorite restaurant, and leave instructions to use it for a night out when things get rough and they need to get away.

Extra money with a designated purpose can help the couple have some fun when they are on tight budget.

5. Make the gift personalized.

Is the bride a best friend? A sister? Find a special clutch purse that she can use on her wedding day and include one or two gift cards to her favorite salons as a sneaky way to treat her to some pre-wedding pampering she’s earned.

Guys can find their best friend and groom-to-be a new wallet to remember his special day by. Put some gift cards to his favorite restaurant or local watering hole and have one last night out, just the two of you, before he says “I do.”
