David Gradwohl and 50 years of ISU Archeological Lab

A cabinet filled with modern primate bones and information about each animal is on display in Curtiss Hall. The display cabinet can be found on the third level near the Department of Anthropology on Oct. 28.

Reputation: Absolutely relentless

College: Majored in geology and archeology at University of Nebraska

Graduate School: Harvard

Career: Hired as anthropologist at Iowa State in 1962

  • Founded ISU Archeological Lab 
  • Director of ISU Archeological Lab

ISU Archeological Lab:

  • Temporary space in the barracks and then moved to the basement of East Hall (still has lab space in East Hall today)
  • First field sites in the Red Rock Reservoir south of Des Moines
  • Didn’t have any equipment before Gradwohl came
  • 50 years this year
