ISU volleyball fought hard to remain in contention amidst a barrage of hits in its first match of the season, but was unable to steal a set as it fell to #3 Stanford 3-0.

Stanford pummeled the Cyclones set after set on Aug. 29 in Hilton Coliseum, boasting a hit percentage of .317 percent compared to only .130 percent for the Cyclones.

Stanford also out-killed Iowa State 49-39.

Senior Victoria Hurtt led the Cyclones with 13 kills in what ISU head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch called one of the best matches she has ever seen Hurtt play. Hurtt complimented her kill stats by committing only four errors on the evening.

Not every Cyclone’s stat sheet read as cleanly, as Iowa State committed 21 errors versus only 10 errors for Stanford.

Sophomore Ciara Capezio led Iowa State in errors with 11 but played actively around the net, tallying the second highest kill count for the Cyclones with 11 on the night.

Iowa State will look to rebound from its season opening loss to Stanford on Aug. 31 when it takes on No. 13 Florida State in Hilton Coliseum. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
