Whether you’re living in the dorms or sharing an apartment with a few friends, space is limited. Here are some tips that will help you utilize the space you do have.

Shelving units and decorative storage boxes are great for displaying books, DVDs and picture frames and holding things you need to keep handy but don’t want to display.

Putting stuff under the furniture is one way you can use that wasted space under the bed and this time you won’t get in trouble. In fact, they now make totes that fit under the bed. If you need more space under the bed than what’s available, you can get risers to lift up your bed. You can also loft your bed if your ceilings are high enough.

Hang things on walls to not only decorate, but to also keep things from taking up your precious surface space. Using push pins to hang jewelry on the wall is a cool way to display your favorite necklaces, bracelets or ties.

Using a daybed instead of a couch gives you a two-in-one piece of furniture that will definitely save space. 

Ottomans, nightstands and coffee tables can come with hidden compartments that let you store remotes, blankets and board games.

Putting your dresser in your closet frees up space in the rest of your room to put other pieces of furniture.

Using a closet organizers is another great way to store things in your closet and free up space in the rest of your bedroom.

Over-the-door shoe racks can be used for more than just shoes. They are great to use for sorting mail for the roommates or holding school supplies and other smaller items.

Don’t bring every item of clothing you own at once. Bring only what you need until you can make it home again to switch out your clothes.

Corner shelving is a great way to utilize that awkward corner space behind the door, TV or couch.
