Ames is expected to experience hazardous weather conditions Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
A Heat Advisory is in effect across Central Iowa, including Ames, from noon to 8 p.m. Heat index values up to 105 are predicted.
Heat illnesses may occur due to the high temperature and humidity. Take precautions to drink plenty of fluids, check in on neighbors and relatives and attempt to avoid the heat if possible.
Additionally, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued an Air Quality Alert for the eastern half of Iowa through 11 a.m. Monday, due to wildfire smoke drifting from Canada.
Monitors near Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Clinton, Davenport and Muscatine are reporting fine particulates at concentrations the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers unhealthy.
Conditions near or above EPA health standards are expected to persist and spread westward.
The DNR recommends that those with respiratory illnesses or heart disease, older adults, children, teenagers, pregnant individuals and outdoor workers try to avoid extended exposure or intense outdoor activity.
Everyone else should reduce long or intense outdoor activities and take breaks from exposure.
