Cris Cab to play Live @ Veishea
April 10, 2014
Cris Cab is set to perform on campus April 12 for this year’s Live @ Veishea. He is a singer, musician and songwriter that will be bringing soul to the stage.
Cab combines multiple influences into his music, including pop, reggae and soul. His diversity has allowed him to open for a variety of acts such as O.A.R., Matisyahu, T-Pain and Gym Class Heroes.
His diverse taste in music started at a young age. When he was five, his parents bought him a guitar so he could play in the school talent show. He gained interest from his parents’ old Beatles and Rolling Stones records. In the summer, however, his family would travel to the Bahamas where he gained influences from Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, according to his website.
When he was 14, his father purchased his first studio time. This allowed him to record some early demos. He met super-producer Pharrell Williams by chance, who let him preview his demos. Though Williams said he had hope, he told Cab to fine-tune his sound.
After following his advice, Cab met up with Williams again. Williams was impressed with the progress Cab had made and began to mentor him. Cab signed a management deal and soon after released his debut EP, “Foreword,” along with his single “Good Girls.” Cab went on tour and met Wyclef Jean, who quickly became his second mentor.
In 2012, Cab released “Echo Boom,” a full-length mixtape produced by — and featured — Williams under Mercury Records. The mixtape featured other artists such as Wyclef Jean, Shaggy and Marc Roberge of O.A.R. Later in October 2012, the EP “Rise” was released under Island Def Jam Records.
Cab gained international fame with his single “Liar, Liar” in 2013, which was released under Island Def Jam Records and has made charts in Germany, France, Netherlands and Belgium. This fame has allowed him to tour many countries.
Cab is starting 2014 touring with famed reggae group Rebelution, traveling nationwide. Following his performance in Ames, Cab will be going overseas to play in France, Norway and Denmark.
