It was an up and down weekend for Cyclone Hockey (19-5-2) who finished their longest road trip of the season by splitting a two-game series with West Virginia.

The No. 4 Cyclones picked up the win in the first game of the series by the score of 6-4.

Iowa State got the scoring going early in the game when Nate Percy scored off the assist from Chase Rey, just under three minutes into the game giving the Cyclones the 1-0 lead.

The Mountaineers were able to answer quickly though when Zach LaDuke was able to score two goals and give West Virginia a 2-1 advantage.

The Cyclones were able to even the score again when Eero Helanto put a slap shot into the back of the net on a power play. But, West Virginia would answer on a power play goal of its own from Nick Persichetti before the first period ended and headed into the first intermission with a 3-2 lead.

Iowa State struck early in the second period when Rey was able to score off the assist from team captain Mark Huber and tie the score at 3-3.

The Cyclones scored again with a little over three and a half minutes left in the second period when an Austin Parle pass deflected off the skate of J.P. Kascsak into the net giving Iowa State the 4-3 lead heading into the third period.

Iowa State added another goal to its lead just under nine minutes into the third when Antti Helanto scored on a power play giving the Cyclones the 5-3 lead.

West Virginia answered back when a LaDuke shot hit off the leg of a ISU defender and Trey Bracy was right there to put the rebound into the net.

Behind by the score of 5-4 West Virginia pulled its goalie late in the period. The move would backfire though as Rey would find Jon Feavel for the empty net goal and giving the Cyclones the 6-4 victory.

Matt Cooper picked up the win between the pipes for Iowa State and saved 27/31 shots.

It was a different story for the Cyclones on Saturday night as the Mountaineers were able to pull the upset and pick up a 5-4 overtime win.

West Virginia got the scoring going just under eight minutes into the first period when Chris King got the puck past ISU goaltender Scott Ismond.

Iowa State tied the score when Cory Sellers scored 12 minutes into the first period sending the teams into the first intermission with the score tied 1-1.

Seven and a half minutes into the second period Conor Frei scored for the Mountaineers to give them the 2-1 lead.

Iowa State evened the score when Helanto scored an assist from Feavel. Frei would strike again though before the second period ended to give the Mountaineers the 3-2 advantage heading into the third period.

The Cyclones would get some late game heroics from Matt Bennett who scored twice in the third period. Bennett struck first with just under 13 minutes left in the period to tie the score 3-3. Bennett’s second goal came with 1:48 left in the period and gave Iowa State a 4-3 lead.

King scored his second goal of the game for West Virginia with less than a minute to go in the period to tie the score 4-4 and send the game to overtime.

The overtime period was very well contested until LaDuke got the puck past Ismond to give the Mountaineers the 5-4 upset win.

Ismond picked up the loss in the net and saved 32/37 shots.
