Even with their leader scorer and starting goalie halfway across the world playing in the Winter World University Games, Cyclone Hockey still managed to win 3-1 against Lindenwood at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena on Friday night, Dec. 6.

ISU forward Jon Feavel, who leads the No. 6 Cyclones (19-5-2, 6-2-0 CSCHL) in total points with 30, and ISU goalie Matt Cooper, who has started every game this year, won’t be in the lineup this weekend due to playing in the University Games in Trentino, Italy.

However, the Cyclones got production from the players they had on the ice, as they beat Central States Collegiate Hockey League rival No. 14 Lindenwood (6-10-2) on Friday.

In the first period of the game, neither the Cyclones nor the Lions were able to put the puck in the back of the net. Goalie Scott Ismond, who replaced Cooper behind the net, stop two of two Lions shots on goal and Lions’ goalie Linus Ahgren stop 6-of-6 ISU shots on goal.

Lindenwood struck first early in the second period with a goal by forward Lukas Daniels. But the Cyclones weren’t denied a goal of their own, as forward Chris Cucullu scored at the 9:30 mark in the second period to tie the game 1-1.

Defenseman Eero Helanto broke the tie late in the third period when his shot bounced of the goal post into the net.

Forward Chase Rey added an insurance goal for Iowa State late in the third to give the Cyclones a 3-1 victory and to capture the first game of this weekend’s series against Lindenwood.

The Cyclones and the Loins will play again at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
