Album Review: Sean Kingston’s “Back 2 Life”

Timothy Goldrick

When the sun goes down your only options are to get hammered, have sex or blow an absurd amount of cash, that is Sean Kingston’s message in his third studio album, “Back 2 Life.” And the delivery of this unoriginal, unorganized and uncreative album is beyond unenthusiastic.

Lifeless is being kind when describing “Back 2 Life.” Lyrics are meaningless, beats are repetitive and guests like Wiz Khalifa and Yo Gotti add nothing to assist this woeful attempt at Pop music.

Kingston’s album was his first since his blow-up in 2009, and while the 23 year-old Jamaican undoubtedly has vocal skill, “Back 2 Life” falls drastically short. “Ordinary Girl” illuminates his talent, but too many other songs conceal it. “Shotta Luv,” “Hold That” and “Beat It” are wishful club-bangers that are ear-cringing. Each has a long list of problems, but an overarching issue on them is Kingston’s poorly produced, auto-tuned vocals.

Given the wishful thinking in “Back 2 Life,” Kingston’s comeback is admirable. In 2011 he suffered a life threatening jet-ski accident off the coast of Miami. So while we can all agree we are elated the “Fire Burning” artist returned to the music scene, it’s hard to give an excuse for this album.

Bottom line is “Back 2 Life” is not worth the time or money. This isn’t vintage Kingston, and his resurrection back to music is more like a funeral.
