Where can you watch live performances by extreme martial artists, traditional Chinese dragon acrobats or ethnic bands? Look no farther than Central Campus.

Many organizations work in conjunction with the Student Union Board to entertain and educate international and traditional students with performances throughout the year.

Shows by bands, poets, comedians and assorted entertainers from all cultures are staged monthly at Iowa State. Many of these unique events are free to students, and also conveniently located on campus or in the community.

International Week

This weed of food and fun, put on by the International Student Council, takes place in November and features crafts, dancing and presentations from cultures around the world. Dining centers also participate by serving international dishes for all to enjoy.

Global Gala

Global Gala is a celebration of diverse cultures and heritages represented at Iowa State and throughout the community. The annual event takes visitors from (in the words of its organizers) “Ames to everywhere” in a matter of hours. It challenges cultural stereotypes and embraces the diversity of our campus and city.

“This event targets all organizations, all cultures and all,” said Anna Prisacari, former multicultural director of the Student Union Board.

Stay up-to-date

The International Student Council updates a calendar of events throughout the fall and spring semesters to keep students aware of upcoming performances. There is also a listing of cultural opportunities from the Student Union Board. Both groups have their events on their Facebook pages.

Getting involved

If you are interested in helping with international events, contact the Student Union Board or the International Student Council to learn about leadership positions and volunteer opportunities.

“I think it really helps foreign students gain skills in communication, decision-making and creating ideas,” Prisacari said. “Working with other cultures has also helped me learn to overcome cultural barriers.”

Whether you’re attending an event or helping run a show, getting involved can help broaden your horizons about your own heritage and those of others.

As Prisacari said, “Students from other cultures can really give back to the community. They provide an international perspective.”
