What you missed in Cyclone sports

Beau Berkley

Thoughts of school are generally not what a student wants rolling through his or her brain during the summer, and sometimes big things go unnoticed.

Here’s what you may have missed over the summer:

May 5: Betsy Saina takes home her eighth Big 12 title after winning the 5,000 meter race.

May 29: Jack Trice Stadium is given the 2012 College Football Field of the Year by SportsTurf Managers Association.

June 6: Betsy Saina ends her career as a Cyclone in fashion by winning her third NCAA Championship after she wins the 10,000 meter race.

June 10: Golfer Scott Fernandez is named the Iowa State Male Athlete of the Year.

June 11: Betsy Saina is named the Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year for the second straight time.

June 14: Coach Corey Ihmels resigns as director of track and field and cross-country and accepts the head-coaching job at Boise State.

June 22: Five-time national champion Martin Smith is hired on as the new director of track and field and cross-country.

What you will not want to miss

Aug. 31: The fall season kicks off as the Cyclones take on Northern Iowa in the home opener. In 2011, the last time the two teams met, the Cyclones needed a fourth quarter comeback led by quarterback Steele Jantz to win 20-19.

Sept. 6 and 8: Volleyball season gets underway as the Cyclones take on San Diego Friday, Sept. 6, and then Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 8. Last season, the Cyclones made headlines after defeating No. 1 Nebraska on Sept. 15, 2012. The Cyclones’ success carried them all the way to the NCAA Regional Semi-Final where Stanford defeated them.
