A good way to make friends is to build relationships with American students. However, this may be intimidating for international students who don’t know the best way to approach them. Although it may seem scary, there are many easy ways to get to know new people.

Friendships International

The Friendships International Program was developed by the International Students and Scholars Office, the Intensive English and Orientation Program and members of the Ames community.

The free program is offered each semester to roughly 60 international students who are interested in learning more about American culture. The program is not a host family program, but a social connection program. It pairs an international student with an American family or student.

The program sets up the first meeting between the two groups and then asks the participants to set up at least two more subsequent meetings.

Popular activities include family dinners, activities on campus and holiday celebrations. Pairings can even be based on hobbies and interests, so they’re a great way to learn more about American families and culture while having fun.

American roommates

When paired with an American roommate, international students have the opportunity to learn about American culture. They also have the opportunity to get help with studying English. International students can also ask their American roommate for advice about certain things.

Find a common interest

Joining a club and going to events are good ways to find people who are interested in similar things. Having common interests can be a great conversation starter. International students can also apply to be teaching assistants.

Fraternities and sororities

Fraternity and sorority members join together as a team to do community work, have common goals and support each other. Most of the fraternities and sororities at Iowa State have houses that members live in communally.

Religion

If an international student is religious, another way to meet American students is to attend church services. Many of the churches in the area also have youth groups the students can join and become involved with.
