David Spalding, one of three finalists for the dean’s position for the college of business, spoke at an open forum on April 8, 2013. Spalding talked to a large audience in 0330 Gerdin about his qualifications for the job and what he would do if he were to be appointed to the position.

David Spalding has been named the new Raisbeck Endowed Dean of the College of Business for Iowa State University.

Spalding, who is currently the senior vice president and senior advisor to Dartmouth College’s Interim President Carol L. Folt, was one of three candidates in contention for the position.

“I am deeply, personally committed to the benefits of higher education,” Spalding said on April 8 at an open forum for the dean position. “I also believe that the strongest higher education institutions are those that have a very student-centered approach…and that’s one of the things that attracts me to Iowa State and to the College of Business.”

Spalding will start as the dean for the College of Business and relieve the current interim dean, Mike Crum, on Aug. 1.

“David has an outstanding record, both in the business world and in higher education administration,” said President Steven Leath in a news release. “I am confident he will take Iowa State’s business programs to the next level…”

Spalding stated in his open forum on April 8 if he was named dean he would begin his time at Iowa State with a “listening tour” to get to know faculty, staff and students along with the challenges they face.
