Nelson; Distance runners claim lead for Cyclones after day one at Big 12s

Four-time All-American Meaghan Nelson brought Iowa State its first Big 12 title of the outdoor season in the 10,000-meter run.

Five Cyclone women finished in the top seven in the 10,000-meter run: Dani Stack finished second, Samantha Bluske finished fourth, Crystal Nelson sixth and Katy Moen finished seventh.

Meaghan Nelson finished the race in a time of 35:05.38 seconds, and with the effort put forth by the Cyclones in the 10,000-meter run the Iowa State women lead the Big 12 standings at the end of day one.

Iowa State currently holds the lead with 35 points, followed by Texas who has 21 points.

Three Cyclones shared time leading the race, as Nelson, Stack and Bluske all took leads with Nelson finally pulling away with several laps left. Nelson never relinquished the lead once she took it.

Iowa State earned points in the hammer throw as well. Senior thrower Hayli Bozarth broke a school record in the hammer throw, with a throw of 207-08, besting her previous school record.

The Iowa State men are fourth in the standings after day one with 12 points, Oklahoma is in first with 31 points.

Ethan Wilkins is sitting in third place in the decathlon after day one, after running a personal best in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.12 seconds. The meet resumes Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles.
