AUSTIN, Texas — Iowa State trails No. 19 Texas 20-7 at halftime at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) honored the school’s recently late former coach Darrell K. Royal by running their first play from scrimmage in the wishbone, which was invented by Royal in 1968. The flea flicker from the wishbone went for a 47-yard pass completion, but Texas would soon punt.

Steele Jantz had two good drives to begin the game, going 3-for-4 for 23 yards while leading the offense through a diverse array of play-calling. That momentum was stifled in a later series for the Cyclones (5-4, 2-4), when Jantz threw a pick to Carrington Byndom.

On the first play of Texas’ third drive, receiver Mike Davis beat his man deep to haul in a 61-yard touchdown pass from David Ash to drive the score to 14-0.

Texas had a shot to extend its lead, but stalled in the red zone to settle for a field goal attempt. However, ISU defensive end David Irving blocked the attempt to keep the score at 14-0.

Unlike last season’s 37-14 loss that saw zero first-half points, the Cyclones scored before halftime with a 14-yard screen pass to Quenton Bundrage with 46 seconds before halftime.

Iowa State will kick off to begin the second half.
