Des Moines to host a series of TED talks

The Science Center of Iowa will be hosting “TEDx Des Moines” Sunday, July 15. The theme for this year’s event is “the space between.”

A group of 11 speakers will present on a series of diverse topics all aimed at getting the audience excited for and inspired to change the world around them.

Iowa State has connections to two of the speakers at the day’s events. Bong Wie, founding director of Asteroid Deflection Research Center at Iowa State, will give a presentation titled “The Space Between Big Problems and Credible Solutions.” He is the founding director of Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State as well.

Scott Siepker is the host of Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Outdoors” program. He will be presenting on the topic “The Space Between Something and Nothing.” He also serves as a founding member of the Iowa Filmmakers. Though currently an adjunct professor of acting at Drake University, he spent part of his academic career at Iowa State as well.

Doors open for the event at 9:30 a.m. After the first speaker, there will be a lunch break followed by the next speaker at 1:15 p.m. After a brief intermission, the final series of speakers will begin at 3:15p.m.
