Brookside Park to get new tennis courts

Emma Wilson

Brookside Park’s tennis courts will be replaced with four new courts in the near future. The project will cost $316,000, not including new lights, and will be funded by the Local Option Sales Tax.

In October 2011, there was a neighborhood meeting to survey the community about what they wanted to do with the tennis courts. There was a small turnout at the event with only 11 residents. The residents present voted to rebuild the tennis courts in Brookside.

The courts were quite old and in need of much repair. Kevin Shawgo, superintendent of Parks and Facilities, said there were “large cracks and poor drainage.”

At this point, the project does not include lights; the addition of lights to the project would raise the cost by $97,000. The lights currently installed will not be useable after the new court is built, as the project does not allow them to stay intact after the demolition of the old courts. The project will allow for lights to be added at a later date if funds are procured.

In addition to the new tennis courts, a basketball court will be added. The basketball court will cost $10,000 and will also be paid for by the Local Option Sales Tax.

The project should be completed by 2013.
