Voices rang out in the Great Hall last night as students belted out their favorite songs in Cyclone Idol, the annual student singing competition. This year’s winner was Chelsey Rouse who sang Etta James’ classic “At Last.”

“It’s a classic song, I usually sing country but it was nice to step out of my comfort zone,” Rouse said.

Rouse said she has been singing before she could walk but was always nervous to sing in front of others.

“That didn’t really end until my junior year of high school,” Rouse said. “The juniors and seniors of my high school do solos if they’re in choir, and I got up there and my shyness just melted away.”

Rouse knows she wants to continue to sing for the rest of her life.

“I love to sing and I know I want to keep singing and if I become something from it, that’d be great.”

Mary Beth Konkowski president of SUB noticed Rouse’s cheering section at the event.

“She had a lot of audience support, along with an outstanding voice, [which] can really eliminate the pressure of singing for this many people,” Konkowski said.

Rouse would like to join one of ISU’s many choirs and hopes to “be something” from singing.
