White, Hoiberg highlight Big 12 Awards for Cyclones
March 4, 2012
The 2011-12 Big 12 Awards were released Sunday afternoon, and the ISU men’s basketball team was well represented.
Coach Fred Hoiberg highlighted the list of Cyclones receiving recognition, as the second-year coach earned Co-Coach of the Year in the Big 12 — alongside Kansas’ Bill Self — after guiding the ISU squad from 3-13 in Big 12 play last season to 12-6 in league play this season.
“I am humbled to be recognized as the Co-Coach of the Year in a league with outstanding head coaches,” Hoiberg said in a news release. “This award is a credit to our players and coaching staff, who worked tirelessly throughout the season to improve each day. I can’t thank them enough for their hard work.”
As far as players go, Royce White led the way for Iowa State. The sophomore was placed on the All-Big 12 First Team, All-Big 12 Rookie Team and was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
White led the Cyclones in points (12.9), rebounds (9.2), assists (5.2), steals (1.2) and blocks (0.9) per game this season, and he was a unanimous selection for each award he received. He also becomes just the fifth Cyclone player to be named to the All-Big 12 First Team, joining Dedric Willoughby (1997), Marcus Fizer (2000), Jamaal Tinsley (2001) and Craig Brackins (2009).
He was joined on the All-Big 12 lists by Scott Christopherson (third team), Chris Allen (honorable mention) and Melvin Ejim (honorable mention).
Four ISU players being honored is the most since 2001, when Tinsley, Kantrail Horton, Martin Rancik and Paul Shirley received awards.
