June 5, 2019
A new assistant city manager for the city of Ames has been selected after a vigorous recruitment process. Debra Schildroth, selected from a nationwide pool of 70 applicants, replaces Bob Kindred who served the city for nearly four decades, retiring in the spring.
Schildroth holds an extensive background in community service and direction and is familiar with the needs of the city. She received her bachelor’s degree from Iowa State and her master’s degree from the University of Iowa, both in social work.
Over the span of 25 years, Schildroth has served as a case manager, assistant director, and director of Story County Community Services as well as the CEO of Central Iowa Community Services. Schildroth currently serves as the director of external operations and county services for Story County.
City Manager Steve Schainker said in a press release he welcomes the leadership and expertise Schildroth brings to the position.
“[Schildroth’s] background in supervision, management, and budgeting provide a diverse background that we believe will serve her well as the city moves forward on challenging projects and ongoing programs,” Schainker said.
According to city documents, the assistant city manager assists in coordinating city operations, supporting city boards and commissions, and achieving goals established by the City Council. Schildroth will assume the role July 1.
